Stains On A Pillow

She tosses and turns all night every night
With eyes wide open, and thoughts adrift
She is grateful for the darkness that surrounds
For she’s too proud to let anyone know

Every night her mind travels back
To the dream she had once lived in
She yearns to find herself again
Staring at the dwindling tracks behind her

She wanders presently into today
How usual everything appeared
She was alive without the dream
Smiling and waving at everyone she met

She hears a sigh in a corner
And quickly closes her eyes in pretense
To all who see, she may well be dead
Except, a tear runs across her face

She greets every morning Sun
Her eyes filled with cheer and her heart with hope
Nothing remains of the agony of the night
But for the stains on her pillow
