My One Regret

The regret stays
For the words I didn’t say,
On that long ago day,
A pain in my heart always.

It was hard to see
You in that hospital bed.
Of the words I said,
I didn’t say the most important three.

Simple “I love you,”
My mouth could not form.
I stood there in a storm.
That day I want to redo.

For now it is too late,
The following day you died.
Many tears I have cried,
My heart burdened with this weight.

If that day I could redo,
I would run to you,
I would say “I love you,”
For it would be the last time I saw you.
