I stand by your bedside watching you
Struggling to breathe
Everyone’s watching
Waiting for a miracle
Reality dawns on us
You won’t make it
It’s time for you to go home
Meet your maker
No more watching you fuss over us
No more coming to visit you at the bank
No more pepper mints before church services
No more warm hugs
We beg for you to wake up
Give us a sign
Move your finger, flutter your eyes
No response
One by one we force our prayers
Whisper how much we love you
And say our goodbyes
This may be the last time we see you
Then tears roll down your cheeks
We know you can hear us
No more suffering
