As I walk this ancient cemetery
reading of old lives lived,
I am deeply moved and obligated to read each
and every stone.
Young lives lost in innocence,
so long ago,
sleeping for eternity,
with a family that loved them so.
Tales of brave soldiers,
that gave their lives for our country,
and slaves that never knew freedom,
joined in eternal rest with the most
prominent members of society.
From the slave to the governor,
now equal members of this final rest,
much like the day they were born.
Once again without bias, hatred or emotion.
Together they shall sleep .
