Caged

in my glass confine

books are my soul’s solace

I flap pages like a caged bird

a solitary reaper wandering

amongst them like a lonely cloud

recollecting my past as the ancient mariner

in recalling my childhood

Anderson’s The Emperor’s New Clothes

mused me with magic spindle

weaving my thoughts

to see the fabrics of my society

in remembering my teen

Pyle’s Robin Hood and his merry men

captured my fascination for adventures

of a man who robbed the rich

and fed the poor

in reminiscing my youth

Shakespeare’s tragic Hamlet

tore my heart and vexed my existence

‘to be or not to be’

is that a question?

twisted as Oliver

in Dicken’s fantasy

all I want to do is to be the lad

who points and shrieks

my Emperor has no clothes again

all I want to do is to be a youth

who seizes his freedom from his King

and is merry again

all I want to do is to be a man

who wants ‘TO BE’ free again

Do you think it could be the best new poem in 2013?

  1. “Caged”, what a fantastic poem.
Our minds are very much like this and of-course it want to be free. Our minds are just like parachuets or they are just like in cage. When parachute open then only it will gluide ortherwise directly on ground. in the same way our minds think freely when it is not in the ‘cage’ and will gluide in the present scenario.
Thanks Kamal for putting your words so nicely.

  2. This is a very thought-provoking poem, packed with imageries and relevant allusions by Kamal. Way to go!
