How do I vote for a poem?

Q. How do I enter the free poetry contest?

A. To enter the free poetry contest here at Best New Poems, you click on the link titled “Submission Guidelines”(These links can be found near the top and bottom of every page of the website.). Read the guidelines for the poetry contest that you find there very carefully. Then, click the link titled “Submit A Poem” at the bottom of that webpage. This will give you access to the form for submitting your best new poem to this free international poetry contest.

Q. When does the poetry contest end?

A. The yearly contest ends at the end of the year. The last poem in the annual contest will be featured on December 14th to be judged. December 15th through December 21st, I analyze the results to determine the winner of the annual poetry contest. Then, I announce the 10 most popular poems of the year, one per day, re-featuring the 10th most popular poem of the year on December 22nd and ending with the most popular poem of the year and winner of the annual poetry contest on Dec. 31st.

Q. How are the poems judged?

 A. The poems will be judged by the poetry fans that visit the Best New Poems website to read them. The most popular poem of the year wins the cash prize. Popularity will be based on several different deciding factors that I can not share with anyone. Sharing these factors would only make it possible for someone to cheat, so I will take the exact formula to my grave..

If I cannot calculate which poems are truly the best because people are trying to influence the deciding factors in their favor, the quality of the poems featured in the annual top ten lists would not be worth reading to the average poetry fan. That would render this poetry contest useless, and I will not be having any of that nonsense! :-)

Q. Is this poetry contest limited to poets in certain countries?

 A. No, as long as your poem is written in the English language and it meets the submission guidelines, you are free to submit one of your best new poems.

Q. Can I post comments on poems featured the previous month?

A. Unfortunately no, comments are disabled after 8 days on all of the poems that are featured for the poetry contest.

Q. How do I vote for a poem?

A.Here at BestNewPoems.com, nothing is considered as a “vote”. There are over a dozen factors that I consider when calculating the popularity of a poem. Likes and shares are just the tip of the iceberg and only represent a small portion of a poems overall popularity score. I will never tell anyone what all the factors are, or exactly how much influence each factor has on a poems popularity score. By doing this, my scoring system cannot be gamed.

  1. Here at Best New Poems, you do not vote for poems, you judge them. If you enjoy a poem that is featured for the contest, there are several ways for you to express it. You can share it, Like it, Tweet it, Pin it, and/or leave a comment about it. If you do not enjoy a poem, no action is required to express it. Negative comments will not be shown to the public unless they contain constructive critisism..

  3. Hi James. i’m from the Caribbean and belong to a poetry group in my country that I would like to share this competition with. My questions are:

    1. If you are a non-US citizen, how are cash prizes received (PayPal is not registered for us here). Can you clarify?

    2. What is done with the poems besides featured on the website- will there be any type of publication with top winners (or anthology of best rated poems) at any time?

    3. While copyright law dictates poets are owners of their works, how are intellectual property rights protected on your site or rewarded if publications are created in the future?

I don’t know if you thought of or have been asked any similar questions, but its not addressed in the FAQs or the submission rules. I would really like to spread the word, as I like what your initiative is doing.

    Looking forward to your responses.

    • Hi Nicholas, These quesions are answered on the appropriate parts of the site for the most part.

Anyone, anywhere, that does not have Paypal will recieve prizes via a money order through postal mail. Poems submitted that meet the guidelines are only featured and archived on this website. Authors must grant me the right to publish there work here to compete but, they retain all rights to their work. The top ten poems/authors in each annual contest are given special recognition at the end of the year via a top ten countdown here on the site, but I have no plans to create and sell a book. If I ever do decide to create an anthology or put something in print, I would have to obtain permission from all of the authors whose work would be included in it and figure out a compensation plan. In other words, until poetry fans start flooding me with requests for a book, I won’t be contemplating any such idea. Even if these requests for a book did start coming in, they would have to include donations and written guarantees to buy the book because I can’t afford it otherwise. Hope this helps :)

    • The quickest way would be to enter the title of your poem or the authors name or pen name into the search box at the top right hand of the website and click on the search tab.
